The Asian Internet Interconnection Initiatives (AI3) Project is a Japanese
research initiative whose aim is to provide an open Internet testbed for the
research and academic community in Asia. With the testbed, it is aims to
promote sharing of expertise and knowledge among researchers and engineers
in Internet technologies to accelerate local Internet development and to
develop technologies and applications for the benefit of the Internet community.
The AI3 project is a satellite-based network infrastructure. It offers its
country partners access to the AI3 network and the network of AI3 partners,
transit access to other research and education networks worldwide and
opportunity for more active research collaboration with connected institutions
In order for the Philippines to participate and benefit from the AI3 network
environment and research community, the country established an informal
consortium of research and academic institutions in the Philippines to
collaborate under the AI3 Project. The AI3-Philippines earth station is
then established to enable the country to participate in networking research
and experimentation being conducted by AI3 partners over this high-speed
satellite-based network.
